Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicinal approach that applies pressure to certain points in the body to stimulate the corresponding muscles and organs. There are seven points, in particular, that are commonly used to relieve pain in the musculoskeletal system.
Putting pressure on these points reduces the pain emanating from the injured or strained parts of the musculoskeletal tissue. Furthermore, it restores the normal functions of the body, which prevents the return of this recurring pain.
The first acupressure point of importance is the pericardium (P6) point. It is located a short distance below the bottom of the palm and in between the big tendons on the inside part of the wrist.
Activating this point through firm but mild pressure treats a wide array of symptoms. The pressure point relieves nausea and vomiting that stem from motion sickness, pregnancy, and many other disorders. It also alleviates pain in the chest and the carpal tunnel, headaches, and upset stomachs.
Up next is the B4 acupressure point, which is found at the middlemost part of the area behind both kneecaps. Hold this point down for one minute. Perform the same process for its counterpart in the other leg. Stimulating both spots will only take you a few minutes at most.
Working on the B4 point decreases pain in the back and knee. It relieves the symptoms of arthritis in the knee joint while also reducing stiffness in the back and hips. It further diminishes the pain caused by sciatica, a condition that is often attributed to an injury in the sciatic nerve that spans the space between the hip and the foot. The pair of points that make up the B10 acupressure point can be located on the occipital hollow below the bottom of the skull. Each point is set 0.5 inches from the spine on either side of the big neck muscles. Applying gentle pressure with the thumbs will bring more than one benefit at the same time.
The B10 point can decrease anxiety, burnout, exhaustion, headache, insomnia, neck pain, and stress. They will bring relief to strained eyes, relax muscles in the neck, and banish headaches caused by tension.
Meanwhile, the Celestial Gathering (Small Intestine 11) acupressure point is smack dab in the center of the shoulder blade. Put a finger to this point if you want to shed the feeling of tension that weighs down your shoulders or if your lower back has been giving you trouble.
The solo point of the Wind Mansion acupressure point can be found on the rear part of the head. Sited right beneath the bottom the skull, it only requires slight pressure via a thumb. It handles pain in the neck and shoulders, and alleviates other musculoskeletal problems in the general area.
The back part of each shoulder holds one of the two acupressure points that make up Gallbladder 21. As you may guess from their locations, they benefit the muscles in the shoulders. Applying careful pressure on these points for a few seconds will bring relief from shoulder pain and neck pain.
Last but not least is the Commanding Middle acupressure point. Found on the crease of the back side of both kneecaps, it can amend arthritis, backache, sciatica, and stiff backs. To relieve yourself of the pain caused by these problems, put firm pressure on one point for three minutes before switching to the other.
