Natural Cleaning Recipes that Work

2 teaspoons borax
20 drops lemon essential oil
1/4 cup liquid dish detergent

How to use:

Pour hot water, white vinegar, borax and lemon essential oil into 32 oz. spray bottle. Add liquid dish detergent last. Shake well to mix before use. Spray surfaces, then wipe clean. Vinegar smell will dissipate.

2. Soft, Nonabrasive All Purpose Scrubber

Ingredients:

1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup baking soda
10 drops lemon essential oil

How to use:

Mix together into a paste and scrub bathroom surfaces. Rinse with water and wipe dry. Nonabrasive, clean formula that works! You can mix up extra mixture to store in glass jar for later.

3. Natural Deodorizer

Ingredients:

Straight 5 percent white vinegar

How to use:

Fill spray bottles full of straight 5 percent white vinegar. Keep one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom. You can use to spray off your kitchen cutting board and countertops for cleanliness and disinfectant purposes. A spray bottle in the bathroom is handy for spraying the solution on the toilet rim and other ceramic areas to keep clean and fresh smelling.

4. Window Cleaner

Ingredients:

1/2 teaspoon liquid dish detergent
2 cups water
1/4 cup white vinegar

How to use:

Add all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Shake well before spraying on windows. Use as you would a commercial brand of window cleaner. Wipe clean.

5. Furniture Polish

Ingredients:

1/2 teaspoon olive oil
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup water

How to use:

Mix all ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Pour ingredients into a glass jar. Use a soft cloth to dab into the polish, then wipe onto the furniture surface. Shake glass jar occasionally to re-mix the solution. After use, cover the glass jar with lid and store indefinitely.

Always vigorously shake the jar when ready to use again. This solution is best used on solid wood furniture, cabinets, and wood trim that has a pure wood finish. Laminates, plastics, and other sealants prohibit the solution from cleaning and moisturizing the wood. You can mix extra and store in a glass jar and seal with lid for later use.

6. Mold/Mildew Cleaner

2 teaspoons tea tree oil
2 cups water

Pour all into spray bottle and shake to blend. Spray on areas affected with mold or mildew. Do NOT rinse with water. Lightly wipe clean with clean cloth. Repeat if necessary. Makes 2 cups. Store solution in spray bottle.

7. Oven Cleaner

Ingredients:

1/4 cup natural liquid soap
1/4 cup white vinegar
4 drops lemon essential oil or tea tree oil
1 1/2 cup baking soda
Add water as needed

How to use:

Dump all ingredients into a glass bowl. Mix into a wet paste. Remove wire racks in oven. Use pastry brush to paint the solution over the entire surface of the oven interior. You’ll see it start to foam and bubble. Let it sit for 8 hours or overnight. To clean, use a sponge scrubber dipped in clean water. Methodically clean the entire oven. All grease and grime will lift right off and you’ll have a clean oven without the toxic fumes of commercial oven cleaners.

9. Unclog the Drains

1/2 cup baking soda
1 cup white vinegar
Hot water, just boiled

Sprinkle baking soda in and around clogged drain. Pour white vinegar into drain. Flush through with boiling water. Pour slowly as the mixture breaks up debris. You will notice bubbling, foaming action. Repeat if necessary until clear.

10. Rust Remover for Tubs and Sinks

Salt
1 Lime

Sprinkle a little salt over the rust areas on the tub or sink. Cut a lime in half and squeeze the juice over the salted areas until it is soaked. Let sit on salted areas for 2 to 3 hours. Use the lime rinds as scrubbers and clean. Rinse well with water and wipe dry.

These are by no means the only cleaning recipes you can make with the suggested supply list above. They are, however, some of the most effective for all-purpose cleaning and deodorizing around the home. Experiment with more ways to use your natural home cleaning kit to keep your family safe from hazardous indoor air pollution caused by toxic cleaning products.
