Truvia: the healthy sweetener that wasn’t

While Truvia was marketed quite well and led consumers to believe it would be the natural, healthy alternative to sugar – appearances can be deceiving.

Truvia claims to be made of stevia leaves – which are known to lend a sweet flavor to beverages. However, very little of stevia is actually used in the product. It isn’t that hard to connect the dots between plummeting diet cola sales and Coca Cola’s introduction of Truvia into the market place. People are learning that soda, whether its diet or not, really isn’t that good for you. And when people cut back on consumption of a product, profit margins get cut back too. So the obvious answer is to release a new product appealing to buyer sensitivities.

Unfortunately, the product is a scam. With a host of rising health concerns, its “naturalness” is easily debunked as well. Truvia is made up of 3 ingredients: erythritol, rebiana and natural flavors. Erythritol is made up of what is essentially fermented corn sugar that’s been purified into crystal form. Rebiana is a derivative of stevia leaf, but is not actual stevia – and makes up less than 1% of a little Truvia packet.

And we all know by now, there’s no way of really knowing what’s in “natural flavoring.”
