7 toxic things hiding in your skin care products

If you really love your skin, it’s time to start looking at the ingredients listed on those product labels. Even if your skin care products claim to be all-natural, it’s not uncommon to find harmful ingredients in “organic” soaps, lotions, deodorants and fragrances. Many of these chemicals don’t just damage your skin, they also pose risks to your whole body, as well! Here’s a list of the top 10 things to look out for:

  1. BHA/BHT: Both are considered possible carcinogens, and are commonly used to lighten skin. These chemicals are banned in Europe due to the damage they wreak on internal organs, such as the thyroid and liver.
  2. Boric acid: Also known as sodium borate, this can cause infertility in men.
  3. Coal tar: Coal tar is a recognized carcinogen still used in dandruff and psoriasis shampoos and hair dyes. It may be listed as aminophenol, diaminobenzene or phenylenediamine.
  4. Mercury: Also listed as calomel, mercurio or mercurio chloride, mercury is toxic in any amount, but is often found in skin lightening products.
  5. Parabens: These are known to cause hormone imbalances.
  6. Triclosan: Triclosan is toxic to your endocrine and reproductive systems.
  7. Retinol: A popular “anti-aging” ingredient, it actually destroys your skin and increases your likelihood of developing skin cancer. Retinols break down in sunlight, dosing you with all kinds of free radicals; they also make you more susceptible to sun damage.
