Are nightshade vegetables the source of your inflammation?

Some of your favorite vegetables might just be the source of your pain. If you suffer from arthritis or other inflammatory conditions, it might be beneficial for you to give up those nightshade vegetables. Research suggests up to 90% of people who suffer from inflammation and various pains are actually sensitive to nightshades.

Nightshade vegetables include the very popular tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant. Fruits such as blueberries, goji berries and kiwis may evoke the same inflammatory response in some people, as well.

Research suggests that although nightshade vegetables may not bring about the onset of pain and inflammation, they can make it worse. The naturally occurring alkaloids found in nightshade vegetables are considered pro-inflammatory markers, and can contribute to the worsening of these types of conditions.

This is not to say you can’t ever eat tomatoes again. But, if you continue to suffer from inflammatory conditions and you don’t know why, you might want to cut out nightshades completely for a week or two, before slowly introducing them back in, one at a time. From there, you can determine what vegetables you need to avoid until your body is given a chance to completely heal.
